The three Grade 11 sciences, and why the choice matters

Ontario offers three Grade 11 university-preparation sciences. Each one is the gate to its Grade 12 counterpart, and each asks for a different kind of thinking.

SBI3U — Biology, Grade 11. Students investigate the diversity and organisation of living things, exploring genetics, evolution and biological systems while developing inquiry and communication skills. The course carries a substantial terminology load and rewards precise written explanation — students who can define a process accurately and in order do well.

SCH3U — Chemistry, Grade 11. Students build a foundation in the relationships between substances and chemical change, using models, calculations and investigations to explore reactions, solutions and gases. It is the most quantitative of the three. Comfort with algebraic rearrangement and unit conversion predicts success better than memorisation does.

SPH3U — Physics, Grade 11. Students use physics to explain motion, forces, energy, waves and electrical systems, combining mathematical reasoning with inquiry. It pairs naturally with MCR3U, and students who are weak in algebraic manipulation often find it the hardest of the three for reasons that have nothing to do with physics.

The Grade 11 to Grade 12 chain

Grade 11Leads toSuits
SBI3USBI4U (Biology)Life science, health science, nursing, environmental programmes
SCH3USCH4U (Chemistry)Health science, chemical engineering, biochemistry, medicine
SPH3USPH4U (Physics)Engineering, physical science, computer science

Engineering and physical science programs typically expect SPH4U and SCH4U. Life science and health science programs typically expect SBI4U plus one of SCH4U or SPH4U. Many competitive programs expect all three somewhere in the record.

Do not treat this as a rule; check each program's prerequisite list. A single missing science can disqualify an otherwise strong application, and the check takes minutes.

Prerequisites

  • SBI3U normally requires SNC2D (Science, Grade 10)
  • SCH3U normally requires SNC2D
  • SPH3U normally requires SNC2D

Students who completed Grade 10 science outside Ontario should request a prerequisite waiver review with official final results before enrolling. Provisional or unofficial results are not accepted for a waiver decision, and a waiver is an entry decision only — it does not award credit for prior study.

How laboratory work works online

This is the first question science students ask, and it deserves a direct answer. Ontario science courses include inquiry and investigation components. Online delivery changes the format, not the requirement.

CNA's platform integrates virtual experiment tools so students can work through investigations without the time and facility constraints of a physical laboratory. A senior physics student can run a simulated electromagnetic induction experiment — moving a magnet through a coil and watching the induced voltage rise to a peak as the magnet approaches the coil's centre, then fall as it passes through — recording and analysing the results as they would at a bench. Interactive experiment videos, quizzes, discussion tasks and group assignments support the same inquiry skills.

Where a course includes a supervised final evaluation, that is arranged separately with proctoring. Practical work and reports submitted for assessment must be the student's own.

Studying Grade 11 science online

Courses are taught by Ontario Certified Teachers and delivered asynchronously through the learning platform, available at any hour. Recorded lessons can be paused and replayed, which is genuinely useful where a derivation or a reaction mechanism needs a second look.

Students normally have up to 12 months from enrolment to complete a course, and enrolment is available throughout the year.

One caution applies to all three sciences: the content accumulates. A two-week gap costs more than it saves, because the next unit assumes the last one. A steady weekly rhythm beats a sprint before the culminating task.

A student scenario

Chloe (pseudonym), Grade 11, Brampton — keeping a health science plan alive.

Chloe wanted to apply to a competitive health science programme, which meant SBI4U and SCH4U in Grade 12. Her Grade 11 timetable placed SCH3U against a required arts credit, and her school could not resolve the conflict.

She took SCH3U online with CNA across the winter term while continuing at her day school, and added SBI3U online the following summer to free space in Grade 12. Because the courses were asynchronous, she could schedule units around her volleyball season rather than dropping the sport.

Guidance reported both marks back to her home school so the credits appeared on her Ontario Student Transcript normally. She entered Grade 12 with SBI4U and SCH4U available in the timetable and no remaining prerequisite gaps.

She received an offer from McMaster University's health sciences programme.

Scenario note: student vignettes in this article are composite illustrations of common pathways, not individual guarantees. Admission outcomes depend on each student's own record and on each institution's criteria and admission year.

Planning notes

  1. Decide the Grade 12 sciences before Grade 11 ends. The Grade 11 course you skip determines which Grade 12 science you cannot take.
  2. Do not take all three Grade 11 sciences at once unless the rest of the timetable is genuinely light. Two is usually manageable; three is a scheduling decision, not a statement of ambition.
  3. Ask about the virtual lab before you enrol if practical work matters to your intended programme. Seeing the tools is more useful than reading about them.

Next step

Send your Grade 10 science record, your intended programmes and your Grade 12 course plan to Guidance. Ask which Grade 11 sciences you need and whether a prerequisite waiver is required.
